Upper Body Lift

An upper body lift is an operation that is designed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper back and “bra roll.”  It is particularly helpful for patients who, through episodes of weight gain and loss, have stretched the skin in these areas.

Prior to surgery, the amount of skin to be removed is carefully marked.  The operation is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about 4-5 hours.

Following surgery, the patient is fitted in a snug garment that supports the area during healing.  Drains are often used to reduce the risk of fluid accumulation under the skin.  The procedure is performed as an outpatient and most patients take about 2 weeks off of work to recover from surgery. The scar fades over 12 months and, although it will never completely disappear, is usually covered by most bras and many bathing suits.

These procedures are typically performed when the patient is at or near their goal weight and their weight has been stable for several months.
